Volvo 5-year maintenance plan and warranty

Every new Volvo comes with the Volvo Plan: a maintenance plan and a warranty that each run for 5 years or up to 100 000 km, whichever comes first, plus 5 years of Volvo Roadside Assistance. The plan covers up to five services, two on a fully electric car, at an authorised Volvo dealer such as Produkta Volvo Cars Mbombela.

What the maintenance plan covers

Your maintenance plan pays for your Volvo’s scheduled services at an authorised Volvo dealer, with their oil, fluids and filters: up to five services on a petrol or hybrid Volvo and two on a fully electric Volvo, within 5 years or up to 100 000 km.

It also pays for parts that wear out with normal use, within limits and at the discretion of the Volvo dealer and Volvo Car South Africa: wiper blades, one set a year, and brake discs and brake pads once they reach their minimum thickness. On petrol and hybrid cars it covers the starter battery too.

The plan starts on the day Volvo activates your car’s warranty, the day it is first put into operation.

What the warranty covers

When a part fails because of a fault in its materials or manufacture, any authorised Volvo dealer repairs or replaces it free of charge, at Volvo’s discretion, for 5 years or up to 100 000 km.

The warranty also covers faults in the factory paint, and rust that perforates the bodywork from the inside or underside: Volvo inspects the panel and, where it finds a defect in manufacture or materials, decides on the repair.

Genuine Volvo accessories are covered too. A fixed accessory such as a towbar carries your car’s warranty, for what is left of it when fitted later; one that is not fixed, such as a roof rack, is covered for 12 months from the day you buy it.

Volvo batteries are covered for the warranty period; once your car is out of its plan, a genuine Volvo battery carries a 12-month parts warranty with unlimited mileage. The high-voltage battery in a fully electric or plug-in hybrid Volvo is covered for 8 years or up to 160 000 km if its efficiency falls below 70%.

How to keep your cover valid

Current petrol Volvo cars, including mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids, need a service every 20 000 km or every 12 months, whichever comes first. Fully electric Volvo cars need a service every 30 000 km or every 24 months, whichever comes first. Book your service on time even when the service reminder does not appear.

Have your Volvo serviced and repaired at an authorised Volvo dealer with genuine Volvo parts, and accident damage repaired at a Volvo-approved body and paint repair centre. After a collision the warranty is suspended until a Volvo dealer has checked the repair.

A late service may be combined with the next one, and then counts as two of your plan’s services. Any late service can be flagged on Volvo’s warranty system, and warranty repairs to the engine, gearbox, differential, fuel system and cooling system may then be declined. Run a full service interval past a due date and the service is missed: the warranty on those parts is cancelled.

Good to know

  • Selling your Volvo

The plan stays with the car. What is left of it passes to the new owner at no charge, once a Volvo dealer has completed a new Volvo Plan agreement with them.

  • What is not covered

Tyres, which carry their maker’s warranty; wheel alignment and balancing; fluid top-ups; normal wear of trim, paint, glass and lights; and damage from accidents, misuse, wrong or contaminated fuel, motorsport, or parts that Volvo has not approved.

  • Driving across the border

Plan and warranty work is done at authorised Volvo dealers in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. Further afield only warranty repairs are covered: the repairer checks with Volvo first, you pay, and you can claim the cost back from a Volvo dealer at home, at Volvo Car South Africa’s discretion.

  • Extending your cover

Volvo Car South Africa offers options to extend your cover beyond your plan. Ask our service team which suits your Volvo. A car that has missed a service can only take an extended service plan.

Maintenance plan and warranty questions

How long is the Volvo maintenance plan?

5 years or up to 100 000 km, whichever comes first, from the day your Volvo is first put into operation. It covers up to five services on a petrol or hybrid Volvo and two on a fully electric Volvo.

What does the Volvo maintenance plan cover?

Scheduled services at an authorised Volvo dealer, up to five on a petrol or hybrid Volvo and two on a fully electric Volvo, within 5 years or up to 100 000 km. It also covers wear items, within limits and at the discretion of the Volvo dealer and Volvo Car South Africa: wiper blades, one set a year; brake discs and brake pads at their minimum thickness; and the starter battery on petrol and hybrid cars.

How long is the warranty on a new Volvo?

5 years or up to 100 000 km, whichever comes first. The high-voltage battery in a fully electric or plug-in hybrid Volvo is covered for 8 years or up to 160 000 km if its efficiency falls below 70%.

Are tyres covered by the maintenance plan?

No. Tyres carry their maker’s warranty, which Volvo passes on to you, and wheel alignment and balancing are not covered either.

What happens when I miss a service?

A late service may be combined with the next one, and then counts as two of your plan’s services. Any late service can be flagged on Volvo’s warranty system, and warranty repairs to the engine, gearbox, differential, fuel system and cooling system may then be declined. Run a full service interval past a due date and the service is missed: the warranty on those parts is cancelled.

Can I service my Volvo somewhere else and keep my maintenance plan?

Volvo Car South Africa’s warranty book lists servicing by anyone other than an authorised Volvo dealer, and the use of used or non-genuine parts, among the things that can void cover. Produkta Volvo Cars Mbombela is an authorised Volvo dealer.

Does the plan transfer when I sell my Volvo?

Yes, at no charge. The plan stays with the car, and what is left of it passes to the new owner once a Volvo dealer has completed a new Volvo Plan agreement with them.

Am I covered when I drive outside South Africa?

The plan and warranty cover your Volvo in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. Elsewhere, only warranty repairs are covered: the Volvo repairer should check with Volvo Car South Africa first, you pay for the repair, and you can claim it back from a Volvo dealer at home with the invoice and, where possible, the replaced parts. Refunds are at Volvo Car South Africa’s discretion.

Can I extend my maintenance plan or warranty?

Volvo Car South Africa offers options to extend your cover. Ask our service team on 013 001 0709 which suits your Volvo. A car that has missed a service can only take an extended service plan.

Where can I read the full terms?

In Volvo Car South Africa’s Maintenance and Warranty Book, opens in a new tab, and in the Volvo Plan agreement you receive with your car.
